The history of drinking beer has long and tangled roots. The low alcohol content of beer gives an imaginary sense of security, and obtrusive advertising, price, and culture of drinking this drink (meetings over a bottle of “beer”, picnics, watching TV programs) aggravate the problem, driving a person to beer alcoholism.
Beer addiction specificity
Beer alcoholism is the most common type of alcohol addiction. Beer addiction can develop over several years with the transition to stronger drinks, turning into severe alcoholism.
Causes and factors
Beer addiction is dangerous due to the specific attitude of society towards beer drinking. Financial companies that brightly and interestingly represent beer on the market do their best to hinder to perceive this as a problem requiring treatment, as a risk to human health and life. The beer is offered as a thirst-quenching drink, omitting that each bottle contains 50-100 grams(!) of pure alcohol. A person from a commercial with a misted glass in his hand is not perceived as a potential alcoholic. While the danger is real.
Reasons for drinking beer:
- Popularity
- Low price
- Hereditary alcoholism
- Relaxation, stress release
- Quenching thirst
- Companies with a beer ‘bias’.
Stages of alcohol addiction
Stage 0: casual or situational use of small amounts of beer (max, 1 liter) with mild psychological addiction. Risk of losing control over the use and the transition to the next stage of addiction.
Stage 1: mental alcohol addiction (an obsessive desire to drink beer, an increase in the dose (more than a liter), the loss of the body’s reaction to an excess of alcohol).
Stage 2: physical and mental alcohol addiction (systematic beer use due to hormonal disorders, switching to stronger drinks, hangover syndrome, binge drinking, alcoholic psychosis.
Stage 3: physiological changes – extreme addiction, zero alcohol tolerance, indiscriminate use of alcohol, complete physical addiction, psychosomatic disorders).
Treatment of beer alcohol addiction can be started at any of these stages but ensures easier and faster long-lasting and positive results if started early.
Symptoms
The following factors can be signs of beer alcoholism:
- physiological (“beer” stomach, headaches, swelling);
- behavioral (aggression, conflict, desocialization);
- psychological (denial of the problem, apathy, depressions).
If you notice the systematic hard drinking of beer or any of these symptoms, do not hesitate to contact a narcologist. The clinic’s specialists will help motivate a person, facilitate and accelerate the treatment of beer alcohol addiction.
Consequences
Beer alcoholism affects all internal organs:
- cardiovascular disorders (thickened walls of the heart, a dilated heart cavity – the so-called “beer heart”, necrosis of the heart muscle, heart attacks);
- gastrointestinal disorders (gastritis, pancreatitis, hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, renal dysfunction);
- brain disorders (death of brain cells, epilepsy, damage to vision and hearing);
- hormonal and reproductive disorders (obesity, in men – an increase in the breast, pelvis, gynecoid-type obesity, in women – coarsening of the voice, growing of beard and mustache);
