Implants for drug addiction treatment in the clinic MedicoMente – Kiev, Ukraine

Drug addiction is one of the major and still aggravating problems. Drugs affect both physical and mental health, which leads to personality degradation and physical disability. One of the most effective solutions to this problem is drug implants, which are used as part of a combination therapy of drug addiction treatment.

It is the implantation of a capsule under the skin or intramuscular injection of a sustained-release drug that is slowly released and thus blocks the opiate receptors in the body, making them immune to the effects of drugs. This makes the drug useless because the dose no longer brings the expected pleasure.

Drug implants are used for drugs of the opioid group:

  • natural – morphine, codeine, thebaine;
  • semi-synthetic – heroin, ethylmorphine, raw opium;
  • synthetic – promedol, tramadol, methadone.

Treatment at MedicoMente

Implantation of an ampoule or an intramuscular injection of the medications is carried out in several stages:

Stage 1. An addicted patient must knowingly stop taking drugs for a period of 2 to 4 weeks (depending on the type of drug and its half-life).

Stage 2. Withdrawal of the drug will often lead to acute withdrawal symptoms and at this stage UROD (ultra-rapid opioid detoxification), active infusion therapy, plasmapheresis and other procedures are recommended to cleanse the body.

Stage 3. When control tests and analyzes show no half-life products in the body, an intramuscular injection is administered or a drug implant is inserted. This is a surgical operation, which consists of a layer-by-layer incision of the skin in inaccessible places (the lower part of the abdominal wall, forearm, buttock), insertion of a capsule, further suturing and application of an aseptic dressing.

Stage 4. Combination therapy to maintain and consolidate the result.

Drugs and implants used in the clinic

Pharmacological medications that help you get rid of physical addiction to drugs are called blockers or complete antagonists. Their action is to block opiate receptors and stop the feeling of pleasure and euphoria from the dose, which is the main incentive for taking drugs.

The intramuscular or implanted drugs contain an active substance called naltrexone hydrochloride (Naltrexone, Vivitrol, Antaxon, etc.). Sterile implants can be in the form of a capsule, tablet or cylinder containing a specific dose of the drug. The drug is gradually absorbed into the bloodstream, liver, where it turns into an active metabolite and blocks opioid receptors.

The time of active action of the implant depends on the drug and its concentration of naltrexone. 800 mg, 1000 mg, 1600 mg, and 2000 mg of active substance for subcutaneous administration lasts for 80, 100, 150, and 200 days respectively.

Some medical centers use Naltrexone to cure alcoholism. But its effectiveness in this case is in doubt by many clinical studies. At MedicoMente, our doctors use Disulfiram, Esperal, Tetlong 250, etc., to treat alcohol addicted patients.

Note! Beware of scammers!

How not to become a victim of unfair doctors and pseudo clinics:

  • Ask your clinic for a license for medical activities;
  • Be sure to check the packaging of the drug before the operation: it must be sealed and have a quality certificate. This ensures the patient does not receive placebo;
  • The clinic must have all the conditions for the implantation surgery, and a sterile operating room;
  • The doctor must have special skills for placing the implant;
  • In addition to implants, blockers are available in the form of tablets and solutions for intramuscular administration. There are no elongated implants or intravenous blockers!

Possible adverse effects

First day after the administration of the drug, the patient may develop side effects, such as:

  • sleep disorders;
  • muscle weakness;
  • hyperhidrosis;
  • anxiety;
  • gastrointestinal discomfort.

After the onset of the drug’s effect (even in the first days), patients may again take the usual dose of the drug, but not get the expected pleasure. Many people stop after that. But if the patient is not ready to give up drugs and decides to try to increase the dose, this can lead to irreversible consequences, such as respiratory arrest, heart failure and, as a result, death.

The drug implant does not cause any addiction but has only a projective effect on the body, therefore, if necessary, the doctor can repeat the administration of the drug after its expiration date.

How to get maximum benefit

Opioid antagonists (blockers, implants) can be implanted only after complete detoxification of the body!

A competent specialist will always do a physiological test before the implant placement, which consists in the preliminary intravenous administration of Nalaxone and Naltrexone in tablet form, which will assess the patient’s readiness for the implantation.

This procedure matters because the administration of Naltrexone into the “dirty” patient’s body will instantly provoke severe withdrawal symptoms due to the contained opium substances. Removing the implant from the body is much more difficult than inserting it!

Drug addiction treatment with implants and injections can be successful only if complying with all its rules and stages. An important point is a voluntary decision to insert an “implant” so as not to continue to take the drug later.

Blockers help to overcome physical and, to some extent, mental addiction but full treatment should include psychocorrection and psychotherapy in order to find and understand the reasons for addiction, learn to live a new healthy and sober life, and make up with family and loved ones.

Life after implantation

In addition to getting rid of physical addiction to narcotic drugs, implantation and further rehabilitation have a beneficial effect on health and psycho-emotional state:

  • Triggers physiological mechanisms of recovery.
  • Stabilizes the psychological and emotional background.
  • Improves overall health.
  • Improves performance.
  • Gives an opportunity to change your mindset and life!
