Treatment of heroin (opioid) addiction at the MedicoMente clinic

Drugs cause addiction. Heroin (opioid) addiction is one of its most severe forms. A professional approach and inpatient regime of MedicaMente will help you and your family to get rid of this trouble.

What is heroin?

Heroin is a semi-synthetic opioid drug, previously used as a remedy for coughing, a sedative, and later as a morphine substitute. It is used in different ways but the most common is intravenous or intramuscular injections, smoking “on folia”.

A drug-affected person is a patient requiring urgent treatment for heroin (opioid) addiction and multilevel long-term rehabilitation.

Mechanism of heroin addiction, its action

Heroin causes immediate and long-term, mainly physical, addiction. The mechanism of action is as follows. The human body produces selectively the required doses of an anesthetic substance called endorphin. Heroin is similar in composition, but it is in excess of the dose of pain reliever. Its very first dose changes the body’s resistance and blocks the production of natural endorphins. Therefore it causes a severe physical addiction from the first use.

Heroin withdrawal. Why is heroin dangerous?

Once entering the human body, heroin causes not so much a “high” as a feeling of maximum relaxation and peace. When its concentration in the body decreases, the person begins to experience heroin withdrawal symptoms (acute withdrawal symptoms), which is characterized by:

  • acute physical pain;
  • muscle cramps;
  • fever, chills;
  • nausea, retching, diarrhea;
  • high blood pressure
  • sleep disturbance;
  • aggression, panic attacks.

The body requires pain control, which means the next dose. But pain relief becomes more and more short-term each time, so the dose has to be increased. The concentration of the drug in the blood increases and can lead to complications and irreversible consequences.

Heroin addiction destroys the human body by affecting vital body functions:

  • immunity decrease;
  • gastrointestinal disorders;
  • sexual dysfunction;
  • cardiovascular disorders;
  • renal and liver disorders (hepatitis, cirrhosis);
  • brain damage due to low blood oxygen levels;
  • mental disorders;
  • destruction of teeth, gums, skin;
  • other concomitant diseases.

Heroin injection bears a high risk of Hepatitis, HIV and other severe diseases.

Signs of heroin use

Early detection of drug use is highly important in the treatment of heroin addiction.

Here are some signs that should alert and be a valid argument for seeking medical help:

  • constricted pupils;
  • needle marks on the body;
  • impaired coordination of movements;
  • weight loss, loss of appetite;
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • mood swings;
  • respiratory disorders, loss of consciousness;
  • change of social environment.

Any of these signs is a reason to consult a narcologist.
